Principal Mechanical Engineer – Building Services

Greater Manchester | £50,000–£60,000 + Car Allowance | Hybrid Working

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Principal Mechanical Engineer to join a well-established Building Services team in Greater Manchester, delivering technically complex projects across sectors including Defence and Nuclear.

This is a senior technical role suited to an accomplished Mechanical Building Services Engineer who can lead packages of work, manage project delivery, liaise confidently with clients and support the development of junior engineers.

The Role

• Lead the mechanical design and delivery of complex Building Services projects.
• Produce and oversee designs for HVAC and Public Health systems.
• Take responsibility for technical detailing, specifications and design quality.
• Lead and coordinate packages of work from concept through to delivery.
• Work closely with clients, Project Managers and multidisciplinary design teams.
• Review and coordinate the work of junior engineers and technicians.
• Mentor and develop Apprentices, Graduates and Engineers.
• Contribute to bids, proposals and tender documentation.
• Present technical solutions clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Collaborate with engineering teams across multiple UK offices.

About You

You will ideally have:

• 10+ years’ Mechanical Building Services design experience.
• Strong technical expertise in HVAC, with Public Health experience.
• A proven track record of delivering technically complex projects.
• Experience leading design packages and coordinating engineering teams.
• Strong client-facing, communication and presentation skills.
• Excellent specification writing and technical detailing capabilities.
• Experience managing and mentoring engineers at varying levels.
• Chartered Engineer status through CIBSE or an equivalent professional body, or be approaching completion of Chartership.
• Experience contributing to bids, tenders and proposals.
• Experience with Navisworks and NBS Create/Chorus would be advantageous.

Due to the nature of the secured Defence and Nuclear projects, candidates must be eligible to obtain SC security clearance. Sole British nationals are preferred, and sponsorship is not available for this position.

Package & Working Arrangements

Salary: £50,000–£60,000 + car allowance, with flexibility for candidates whose experience warrants consideration above this range.

Location: Greater Manchester

Working Pattern: Hybrid – three days per week in the office

Position: Permanent
