Principal Electrical Engineer

Due to continued growth, our client is seeking Principal Electrical Engineers to support and lead the development of their Electrical Design teams across offices in Blackburn, London and Glasgow.

The role

The Principal Electrical Engineer will play a key leadership role in the delivery of electrical design across a range of high-profile projects. The position will involve overseeing project outputs, supporting the management of design teams and ensuring that all work is delivered to the highest technical and professional standards.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading the delivery of electrical design for major projects and managing a section of the Electrical Design team to ensure programmes and quality standards are achieved
  • Liaising with clients to understand, interpret and document project requirements, while supporting business development activities
  • Developing technical specifications, calculations, electrical designs and drawings across a variety of projects
  • Producing power cable calculations, C&I cabling specifications, cable and interconnection schedules, and electrical building services designs including lighting and alarm systems
  • Contributing to early-stage project activities including site investigations, surveys, client meetings, submissions and presentations
  • Supporting the preparation of design documentation in line with project requirements, client specifications and legislative compliance
  • Identifying, resolving and proactively preventing design issues
  • Selecting appropriate electrical equipment and systems for project delivery
  • Ensuring compliance with CDM regulations, internal design processes, legislation and company procedures
  • Supporting the specification of electrical elements during tender stages

Skills and experience

  • Minimum of five years experience producing electrical designs within power generation, power transmission, renewable energy, building services or similar sectors
  • HND/HNC or degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline
  • Chartered Engineer status, or working towards this, is advantageous
  • Strong knowledge of BS7671 Wiring Regulations and relevant CIBSE electrical standards
  • Experience or understanding of CHP, biomass, solar or other renewable technologies is beneficial
  • Understanding of HV design and protection is advantageous
  • Experience with Amtech design software is desirable
  • Knowledge of pneumatic and hydraulic systems is advantageous
  • Experience with motor VSD controls and MCC equipment is desirable
  • Full UK manual driving licence
