Director (Geotechnical)

This consulting firm delivers nuclear, geo-environmental and infrastructure solutions that keep the UK’s energy transition safe and on schedule. As Director (Geotechnical) you will set the technical standard for ground engineering on nuclear new-build, decommissioning and major civils schemes, turning complex site data into designs that protect people, programme and the environment.

Performance Objectives

• Win and deliver £2m+ of geotechnical and geo-environmental work within 18 months, achieving 95 % on-time, first-time-right submissions that satisfy ONR, EA and CDM requirements.
• Lead site investigations and foundation designs for at least three Category 1 nuclear or high-hazard projects, reducing ground-related programme risk by 25 % versus baseline.
• Build and mentor a 10-person geo-environmental team, achieving 90 % retention and promoting two engineers to Associate within two years.
• Embed carbon-reduction measures into every design, contributing measurable savings that support Westlakes’ certification programme.
• Establish a repeatable QA and digital-modelling workflow (3D ground models, BIM) used on 100 % of projects by month 12.
• Zero lost-time incidents under your site-supervision remit and full audit compliance on every nuclear package.

Environment & Resources

You report to the Managing Director and sit on the senior leadership team. You will have a dedicated geo-environmental group, access to in-house structural, nuclear and 3D-modelling specialists and authority over investigation budgets and subcontractor selection. Based in Manchester but with coverage across Cumbria and the North-West.

Essential Qualifications

• Chartered Engineer (CEng MICE or equivalent) with 15+ years’ geotechnical experience, at least five on nuclear or high-hazard UK sites.
• Proven record of winning and delivering multi-million-pound ground-engineering packages from SI through construction.
• Hands-on knowledge of Eurocodes, BS 5930, nuclear safety cases and CDM Principal Designer duties.
• Demonstrable success building and retaining technical teams in a consultancy environment.
• Competence with digital ground modelling and BIM coordination.
