This role leads that intersection: shaping schemes that communities rely on, winning the work that funds them and leaving teams stronger than you found them. You will be accountable for outcomes clients can measure—safer assets, cleaner programmes and advice they act on.

Performance Objectives

Win and retain infrastructure commissions by converting relationships into scoped, profitable mandates with clear technical scope and delivery risk.

Direct live schemes from optioneering through design assurance so programmes hit agreed cost, programme, and quality gates.

Set the technical standard on highways, civils, structures, or related infrastructure so reviews catch issues before they become claims.

Grow a capable team: coach principals and engineers, fill critical skills, and raise utilisation without burning the bench.

Own commercial performance for your portfolio—fee recovery, margin, and change control—and report it plainly to leadership.

Represent the practice with clients, contractors, and authorities so decisions are made on evidence, not noise.

Embed health, safety, and CDM leadership so zero-harm is how work is planned, not a slogan after the fact.

Environment & Resources

You join a multidisciplinary engineering practice and report to a director with a clear line to practice leadership. You lead project and discipline teams across Manchester and wider UK commissions, with authority over technical sign-off, resourcing, and fee proposals on your book. You will have established design, BIM, and project-control tools, specialist support from adjacent disciplines, and a defined bid and QA process—not a blank spreadsheet and a hope.

Essential Qualifications

Chartered engineer (or equivalent) with a proven record leading complex UK infrastructure design or delivery.

Demonstrable client ownership: you have originated or materially grown fee income, not only delivered someone else’s brief.

Track record of design assurance on multi-discipline schemes, including interfaces with contractors and statutory stakeholders.

Evidence you have built or led teams—hiring, coaching, and holding people to programme and quality.

Working command of UK statutory duties relevant to infrastructure (including CDM) and of commercial control on professional services contracts.

Clear written and spoken judgement: clients and boards understand your recommendations the first time.
